Trailer Brake Controller Installation in Littleton, CO

If your trailer has electric brakes, you need a brake controller in your tow vehicle. It's the law in Colorado for trailers over 3,000 lbs, and it's the difference between stopping safely and hoping for the best on a downhill grade.

What a brake controller does

A brake controller sits in your cab, usually under the dash, and sends an electrical signal to your trailer's brakes when you hit the brakes in your truck. The better the controller, the more smoothly your trailer brakes engage. A cheap controller slams the trailer brakes on. A good one makes the trailer feel like it's part of your truck.

What we sell and install

We install brake controllers from the brands that actually work:

  • Tekonsha Prodigy P3- the standard. Proportional braking (matches your truck's braking force), digital display, works with electric and electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes. This is what we recommend for most people.
  • Tekonsha Primus IQ- proportional braking at a lower price. Fewer display features than the P3, same core braking performance.
  • CURT brake controllers- Venturer (time-delayed, budget option) and TriFlex (proportional). Good options depending on your trailer and budget.
  • Factory-integrated controllers- if your truck came with a factory brake controller option and you didn't get it, we can often add the OEM controller. Call with your VIN and we'll check.

What professional installation gets you

Brake controller installation isn't just plugging in a box. Our installs include:

  • Vehicle-specific wiring harness (no splicing into your factory wiring when a plug-and-play harness exists for your truck)
  • Controller mounted within easy reach of the driver
  • Manual override lever tested and explained
  • Gain set for your trailer's weight and brake type
  • Full test with your trailer connected, so you drive out knowing it works

Most brake controller installs take about an hour. If we're also doing wiring or a hitch, we'll handle it all in one appointment.

Do you need a brake controller?

Colorado requires trailer brakes on any trailer with a gross weight over 3,000 lbs. If your trailer has electric brakes (most travel trailers, toy haulers, and larger utility trailers do), you need a controller to activate them. Surge brakes (common on boat trailers and rental trailers) don't need a controller. If you're not sure what kind of brakes your trailer has, bring it by and we'll take a look.

Proportional vs. time-delayed: what's the difference?

Proportional controllers sense how hard you're braking and send a matching signal to the trailer. Brake gently, trailer brakes gently. Brake hard, trailer brakes hard. Time-delayed controllers send a fixed amount of braking that ramps up over a set time, regardless of how hard you're actually braking. Proportional is smoother, safer, and worth the extra money. We stock both and will tell you honestly which one fits your setup.
